The mountains of Osttirol are vast, mysterious, and full of magic. To young adventurers, this Austrian vacation region seems like a living fairy-tale land. Every peak, every forest, every rocky path could tell a new story, just waiting to be brought to life by a child’s imagination. Lake Tristach looks like an enchanted mirror; at Heinfels Castle, they’ll feel like knights or princesses; and on the Fun Alpin summer toboggan run, the little ones will zoom through the realm of animals.
Like a magical lake, the legendary Ochsenlacke lies at an elevation of 2,350 meters on the Mooseralm in the Defereggental valley of Osttirol. Right along the ridge leading to the Kleiner Leppleskofel, brook trout, dippers, dragonflies, Alpine newts, and grass frogs live as guardians of the mountain’s water treasures. Rumor has it that they once arrived there aboard an ark that looks like an enchanted ship, the remains of which still serve as a panoramic viewpoint. Children balance on the giant playground structures surrounding the mountain lake and play as if they themselves were little water spirits.
Just a few minutes from downtown Lienz, the Galitzenbach streams through the Galitzenklamm gorge in waterfalls and rapids. At the foot of the Lienzer Dolomiten lies the entrance to a truly special natural landscape. A nature trail leads through the forest, past rugged rock faces, up to the viewing platforms overlooking the Osttirol mountains. Its 266 three-thousand-meter peaks resemble sleeping giants more than mountain summits. At the adjacent playground, the little ones can climb, splash, and play to their hearts’ content. The natural playground, built from wood, stone, and water, features a water maze, a rope ferry, and sand play areas with mud pits, as well as a mini-climbing garden, a water wheel, and a wobbly bridge. Meanwhile, parents can relax on wooden lounge chairs and watch their children romp around.
Castles, palaces, and ancient traditions transport the whole family back to times gone by. At the Alpine Life Open-Air Museum in Innervillgraten, traditional crafts come to life—it shows how the creative minds of past generations used nature to make tools and everyday objects. Fans of the Middle Ages can take a trip to Bruck Castle, with its impressive architecture and fascinating stories from the 13th century.
Heinfels Castle, on the other hand, becomes a mystical fortress where a ghost might rumble through the dark towers and secret passages lead to hidden chambers. At the museum and archaeological sites of the Roman city of Aguntum, time travelers of all ages can learn everything about the life and culture of Tyrol’s only Roman city. Yet the ruins also seem like the remnants of a kingdom where an ancient treasure from antiquity might be hidden.
If you’d like to explore the region south of the main Alpine ridge in a fun way, visit the Golzentipp Kids’ Trail in Obertilliach. This stroller-friendly hiking trail leads past 13 stations to the summit cross on the Golzentipp. The Höfe Trail, on the other hand—Austria’s first long-distance hiking trail for families—becomes a magical path that winds through the land of the mountain farmer elves: a talking tree, a singing frog, or a cloud that transforms into various shapes. The little ones imagine encountering tiny, glittering creatures in the woods who help them gather herbs and unlock the secrets of nature.
The Hochpustertal Family Nest is considered particularly family-friendly. From July through September, attractive weekly activities take place there under the supervision of pedagogically trained childcare providers. The “Wichtelexpress” takes visitors to various adventure spots in Osttirol, such as a high ropes course or the Wichtelpark with its interactive village, mine, and twin towers.
