The green heart of Osttirol beats in the Hohe Tauern National Park: one of the largest and most pristine protected areas in Central Europe covers over 611 km² of pure nature. It is rich in dramatic high mountain landscapes, deep green mountain lakes, thundering waterfalls and rugged glacier massifs. Three quarters of this area is under strict protection, so that fauna and flora thrive largely free from (agricultural) exploitation. More than half of all mammal, bird, reptile and amphibian species in Austria live here. In addition to the so-called "Big 5" - chamois, ibex, marmots, golden eagles and bearded vultures - there are also over 3,500 plant species, ranging from delicate alpine herbs to rare Swiss stone pine forests.
However, the national park is not just a nature reserve, but with its more than 266 three-thousand-metre peaks, it is also an adventure area: whether on a guided tour with the national park rangers, observing wildlife in the wildlife observation tower or on a quiet summit trail: if you are out and about here, you will feel the power of the Alps in every step and every nuance of nature up close.
