Kartitsch

A vacation destination in one of the most beautiful high valleys in the Alps

Nestled between the foothills of the Lienzer Dolomiten to the north and the Carnic Ridge to the south, the village of Kartitsch lies at an elevation of 1,356 meters in the Tiroler Gailtal. The unique mountain scenery, complemented by fascinating and well-preserved nature, creates lasting memories for vacationers. It’s no wonder that the Tiroler Gailtal-Lesachtal valley, home to the mountaineering village of Kartitsch , is considered one of the most beautiful high valleys in the Alps. With its districts of Hollbruck and St. Oswald , the municipality—which is just under seven kilometers long—stretches from the idyllic town center all the way to Rauchenbach and the Kartitscher Sattel. Kartitsch and its hamlets are also home to several historic buildings, most of which are religious structures, that are protected as cultural monuments.

These include, among others, the beautiful parish church of “St. Leonhard,” the pilgrimage church of “Our Lady of Mariahilf,” and the branch church of “St. Oswald.” The unique landscape, with its well-tended fields and lush meadows, is largely thanks to the hard work of Osttirol farmers. No matter when you visit Kartitsch: In every season, the town and the entire region exude an incredible charm— a wonderful vacation experience is guaranteed!

During the warmer months, this mountaineering and hiking paradise offers countless, varied trails. The municipality, one of Osttirol’s mountaineering villages, serves as the starting point for Der Gailtaler Höhenweg, and the " Karnischer Höhenweg " trail also runs through the Kartitsch municipal area. The trails to the Obstansersee Hut and the Filmoor Hut also offer beautiful hikes through unique landscapes .

When winter sets in in Osttirol and the area around Kartitsch is transformed into a snow-covered winter wonderland, the town more than lives up to its nickname as Austria’s “first winter hiking village.” Countless winter hiking trails are just waiting to be explored. Whether on the sunny or shady side, challenging or leisurely—there’s something here for every taste. Ski enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy in Kartitsch.

In addition to the Dorfberg lift, where night skiing is regularly offered , the town also has a small T-bar lift on the shaded side—where snow is guaranteed—where beginners in particular can fine-tune their turns on two skis. Cross-country skiing is very popular in the Tiroler Gailtal Valley, which is one reason why one of the most beautiful high-altitude trails in the Alps winds its way from Kartitsch toward Obertilliach through the wild and romantic landscape. Along the trail, you can marvel at and experience the unique idyll of the wild nature surrounding Kartitsch. Situated a bit higher up, the Dorfberg high-altitude cross-country trail winds through secluded forests and untouched nature— breathtaking views guaranteed!
