Hiking Tips in the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

In Osttirol, there are no fewer than 266 peaks that rise above the 3,000-meter mark. Most of them are located in the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. With so many options, it can be hard to choose just one peak. That’s why we’ve put together a few suggestions for lesser-known summit hikes in the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern.

Prägraten am Großvenediger: Dreiherrenspitze (3,499 m)

At 3,499 meters, the Dreiherrenspitze is one of the highest mountains in Osttirol. Surrounded on all sides by glaciers, the mountain towers at the end of the Umbaltal Valley in Prägraten am Großvenediger. The best route up is via the Umbaltal Valley. Accommodations: Clarahütte (2,038 m)

Virgen: Hoher Eichham (3,371 m)

At an impressive 3,371 meters, it towers over the Virgental Valley. The standard ascent follows the path through the Great or Little Niltal Valley to the Bonn-Matreier Hut. From there, there is only one trail leading over the Sailkopf to the summit of the Hoher Eichham. Accommodations: Bonn-Matreier Hut (2,750 m)

Matrei in Osttirol: Großer Muntanitz (3,232 m)

The best way to climb the highest peak of the Granatspitz Group is via the Sudeten-Deutsche-Hütte, the Wellachköpfe, and the Kleiner Muntanitz. Once you reach the summit, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the Großglockner and the Venediger Group. Accommodations: Sudeten-Deutsche Hütte (2,650 m)

Kals am Großglockner: Gramul (3,276 m)

Between Teischnitz Kees and Fruschnitz Kees rises the Gramul, at 3,276 meters. It’s the ideal mountain for climbers who enjoy peace and quiet on the mountain. An absolute hidden gem with a perfect view of the Großglockner and its surroundings. Accommodations: Stüdlhütte (2,801 m)

St. Jakob in the Defereggental Valley: Alples Spitze (3,149 m)

The Alplesspitze is the second-highest peak on the Panargen Ridge. The standard route begins at the Oberhaus parking lot and leads past the Ochsenhof. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view that’s second to none. Place to stop for refreshments: Alpengasthof Oberhaus (1,770 m)

Nußdorf Debant: Glödis (3,206 m)

The Glödis (3,206 m) in the Debant Valley is rightly known as the Matterhorn of Osttirol. Its striking shape is visible from many peaks in Osttirol, and its exquisite summit captivates from every angle. Ascent via the standard route or via ferrata. Accommodations: Lienzer Hütte (1,977 m)
