Running in Osttirol

Mountains that move you.

The running scene in Osttirol is thriving under the watchful eye of Austria’s highest peaks. The unspoiled mountain landscape between the Tauern and the Dolomites serves as the perfect setting for sports. In July, the Großglockner Ultra-Trail winds its way across all the mountains—circling Austria’s highest peak in more than 24 hours. Endurance and courage are essential for this ultra-long-distance race.

Participants in the world’s toughest team competition—held every September in the Lienzer Dolomiten—need muscles of steel. Teams of four take on the Red Bull Dolomitenmann, with one trail runner, one mountain biker, one paraglider, and one canoeist each engaging in a sensational battle against rock, wind, and water. The many mountain races in Osttirol also take participants high up into the mountains: the Simonysee Mountain Race in Prägraten am Großvenediger or the Zuniglauf in Matrei, for example, to name just a few of the classics in the heart of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern.

Osttirol’s mountains offer the perfect training conditions for ambitious athletes. At the new high-altitude trainingrunning camps in Kals am Großglocknerorganized byrun2gehter , participants not only learn the perfect running technique but alsoreceive a warm welcome from our local innkeepers, who—with balanced and tailored meals—have a different insider tip in store every day to help you get fitter.
