As only 6% of the municipal area of Hopfgarten in Hohe Tauern National Park can be settled on, you'll find untouched and pristine nature here like hardly anywhere else. When out and about in the impressive mountain ranges, you may catch sight of eagles, chamois and marmots on the way to the summits of Riegel or Stanzling. On the summit plateau of Regenstein – with 2,891 metres the highest mountain of Hopfgarten – you can enjoy the unforgettable view of the border mountain to Villgratental to the fullest. In addition to the Glockner Group across the Venediger Group, you can also marvel at the South Tirolean and Lienz Dolomites as well as the Carnic Ridge from Regenstein Mountain. The gentle ridge of nearby Firstkogel is also home to the geographic centre of Osttirol. The expansive natural landscapes around Hopfgarten offer numerous hiking options, with the Apollo trail enticing you to enter the realm of Apollo – a beautiful butterfly – where the "Tröglis-Schupfen" give weary hikers the chance to rest on nice-smelling hay stores. The Edelweiss trail runs significantly higher, fully living up to its name. Austria's national flower edelweiss, highly symbolic to the region, flowers high above Hopfgarten. It is under constant watch of the King of the Skies and trademark of Defereggen Valley – the Eagle. A cross-border multi-day hike into neighbouring Antholzer Valley to Italy also makes for an unforgettable experience.
As wonderful as mountain hiking may be, there are also plenty of options for shorter and more leisurely walks in Hopfgarten. The water trail along Schwarzach River on the one hand offers unique encounters with nature, but also imparts knowledge about the use and dangers of water thanks to presentation boards. This tour also leads you past the beautifully designed pond arrangement "Auen Tümpfl", a biotope teeming with fish and a children's playground. The many natural gems of Hopfgarten can also be reached on the hiking trails. Thus an exciting hike to Glaurit Waterfall, for example, is worthwhile as is a quiet afternoon on the banks of idyllic Geigensee Lake. But the nature around Hopfgarten can also be explored on the mountain bike routes of Zwenewaldweg and Dölacher Almtal.
