The Maria Schnee pilgrimage churchpilgrimage church St. Mary Major in Obermauern is well worth a visit. Before the gates of the church, the custom of offering up a ram is celebrated annually, having been recognised by UNESCO as "intangible cultural heritage".
The natural gem Iselschlucht Gorge and the educational water trail along the Umbal Falls, where the Isel unleashes its mighty powers, are located not far away from Virgen. A few kilometres downriver by the banks of the glacial river, a former sawmill now houses a stone carving workshop. Here, massive serpentines and trees from the valley stripped off their bark are transformed into elaborate sculptures, and the artists often let you watch them at work. In the warmer months, the landscape around Virgen beckons with countless hiking trails and footpaths. Those who want to enjoy nature can embark on the Trail of Senses to explore the Virgen fields and meadows. Several scenic long-distance hiking trails also lead through the picturesque landscape, which surrounds the national park community of Virgen. The walking and running-Arena Virgental also boasts 76 kilometres of trails and 14 signposted circuits of various distance and levels of difficulty.
