Sillian

The Gateway to Osttirol's Mountains

Located right on the border with Italy, Sillian is one of the largest municipalities in Osttirol and is also the main town in the Osttiroler Pustertal. This inviting vacation and day-trip destination lies directly at the foot of the Thurntaler, which rises majestically to 2,400 meters. To the south, Sillian is bordered by the Carnic Ridge. The western municipal boundary also forms the national border between Austria and Italy.

On the sunny slopes north of the Drau River, the beautiful parish church of the Assumption of Mary watches over the town center, and the “Queen of the Pustertal,” Heinfels Castle, can be spotted to the east. The town is sure to impress not only with its scenic beauty but also, and above all, thanks to its numerous recreational activities. And you can access these with the Osttirol Welcome Card for free during your stay.

Sillian in Winter

When winter arrives in Osttirol—and thus also in Sillian—a very special time begins. At the town’s ice rinks, whether in the town center or at the modern ice arena, young and old alike glide joyfully across the ice. Ski enthusiasts also get their money’s worth: The versatile Sillian-Hochpustertal Ski Center on the Thurntaler, with its varied slopes, leaves nothing to be desired. Winterwichtelland in Sillian is a true highlight for families. With lovingly designed winter wonderlands, fun activities for children, and a fairy-tale atmosphere, it offers fun and unforgettable moments for young and old alike.

But the Hochpustertal has even more to offer, especially for those who want to enjoy winter away from the slopes. Ski touring in the Villgratental valley takes you along well-marked routes through quiet, snow-covered landscapes—ideal for ski tourers seeking peace and nature. And for those who’ve always wanted to stand at the biathlon shooting range like real pros, the Obertilliach Biathlon Center makes that dream a reality.

Sillian in the Summer

During the summer months, the so-called “Family Nest” program is also very popular. It features weekly activities supervised by trained childcare providers. The “Wichtelzug” takes children to various adventure spots, such as Wichtelpark Sillian. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are countless options in Sillian anyway.

The widely known and popular Drauradweg runs along the refreshingly cool riverbank through the market town. Beautiful mountain huts, such as the Sillianer Hütte or the Leckfeldhütte, invite you to take a cozy break at lofty altitudes. Our tip: With the Osttirol Card, you can visit the Wichtelpark (excluding the high ropes course) and Heinfels Castle daily, and use the Hochpustertal mountain railways.
