Sillian

Located right on the border with Italy, Sillian is one of the largest villages in East Tyrol and is also the main town in the East Tyrolean Pustertal Valley. This enticing holiday and excursion destination lies directly at the foot of the Thurntaler, which towers majestically at 2440 meters. In the south, Sillian is bordered by the Carnic Ridge. The western municipal boundary also forms the state border between Austria and Italy.

On the sunny slopes north of the Drava, the beautiful parish church Maria Himmelfahrt watches over the centre and also the "Queen of the Pustertal", Heinfels Castle, can be spotted in the east. Not only visually, but above all thanks to the numerous recreational offers the place is a convincing destination. Hikers and adventurers will love Sillian just as much as families and those seeking relaxation.

When the last snow has melted and temperatures are rising, Sillian turns into a true hiking paradise every year. Countless beautiful summit and hiking tours lead through striking landscapes and past numerous natural gems. Especially the Carnic Ridge in the south of the municipality provides many rewarding tour destinations. Another highlight is also south of the Drava - the Wichtelpark (Dwarf Park). Here, young and old can spend adventurous and entertaining hours. The Wichtelpark’s programme and services focus on families. In addition to a huge adventure playground, there is a high ropes course and a minigolf course.

In summer, the so-called Familiennestprogramm (family nesting programme) enjoys great popularity. Supervised attractive programmes are offered every week by pedagogically trained caregivers. The "Wichtelzug" (dwarf train) takes you to various adventure sites, such as the Wichtelpark or the Wonky-Tonky River, where adventurous treasure hunters wash gold and maybe even find it. For outdoor fans there are countless possibilities in Sillian anyway. The well-known and popular Drau Cycle Path runs along the refreshingly cool river banks through the market town. Beautiful lodges, such as the Sillianer Hütte or the Leckfeldhütte, invite you to a cosy retreat in lofty heights.

When winter has arrived in East Tyrol and thus also in Sillian, the skates can be put on ice in several places in the village. Whether on one of the ice rinks in the village centre or in the ice arena in Sillian, the blades get used every winter. For skiers, the versatile ski resort Skizentrum Hochpustertal leaves nothing to be desired and offers plenty of variety on its varied slopes. If the snow conditions allow for, you can also look forward to a special offer in the Pustertal Valley: there is a cross-border trail to the few kilometres away - Italian - town of San Candido.

Whether in summer or in winter, for hiking or skiing - in Sillian you can experience genuine East Tyrolean holiday pleasures all year round.

Tip - the Blue Sky flight school: Speaking of lofty heights. At the Thurntaler you can paraglide into the valley - the flight offers beautiful views of Sillian, Heinfels Castle and the Carnic Ridge.

On Shrove Tuesday, the weather will calm down. Ash Wednesday will bring a deterioration and new snowfall.
