Well sheltered at the foot of the "aeon Majesty", the Grossvenediger (3,666 metres), the village nestles up to the pristine landscape of Virgen Valley, framed by more than 50 impressive 3,000 m peaks.

Prägraten am Großvenediger in summer

Despite its remote location, Prägraten has no shortage of leisure options, seeing that extensive parts of the municipal area are located in the Hohe Tauern National Park. The rushing torrents of the Umbal Falls provide unforgettable encounters with the element of water, where the Isel River unleashes its wild powers. The water theatre at the last free-flowing glacial river in the Alps has been captivating visitors and locals alike for many years. The mountain hiking village in Hohe Tauern National Park owes its byname to its countless hiking trails. Walking on one of the many hiking trails opens up the senses against the backdrop of the wonderful mountains, such as on the high alpine pilgrimage trail – the "highest way of the cross in the Alps", which offers two versions of varying difficulty to hikers. But impressive, high alpine hikes can also be found on the Venediger high route through the natural wonder of the Venediger Group as well as the Lasörling high route – always past juicy alpine meadows, fragrant forests and summits in a myriad of shapes. Furthermore, here in the Hohe Tauern National Park you can also hike on the trail of the King of the Skies on the Eagle's Trail. Those who want to embark on the search for myth-enshrouded fables, will strike gold on the Virgentaler Sonnseitenweg trail. Unique impressions are also in abundance on a horse riding tour in nature with horses from the Prägraten equestrian farm. But above all, Prägraten is also a true paradise for mountain bike fans, who can find countless and varied routes here.

Winter in Prägraten

The peaceful and secluded location keeps out any major hustle and bustle and in Prägraten they know just all too well how to play this as an ace. Especially the optimally groomed winter hiking trails and snowshoe tours are unrivalled. The latter can be enjoyed with the guidance of Venediger mountain guides, who provide interesting details of the diverse Virgental nature and fauna in the process. Prägraten knows how to impress guests in winter especially with its multifaceted network of cross-country ski trails, which recently was awarded the Tirolean Cross-Country Ski Trail Seal of Quality. A total of five cross-country ski trails lead through the wild nature and divine winter scenery in and around Prägraten. The community at the head of Virgental Valley also has a small and fine ski area. At the Bichl lifts, especially those taking up skiing can hone their carving swings on a moderate incline before setting off for larger ski areas. Without needing state-of-the-art cable.
