Unique in the Alps – East Tyrol’s hiking trails

‘Only he who knows his destination’, said Lao Tse, ‘finds the way’. More than 2000 years ago, this sage from China would of course not have been aware of the hiking trails in East Tyrol. They are everywhere, with no exact destination, and they are easy to find. The giant route network is not only excellently signposted, it is also permanently tended and maintained. It is the altitude level which makes East Tyrol’s hiking trails so unparalleled. Altitude paths represent the very special charm of this state. They serve the high alpine regions on a platter, so to speak, and cross through natural gems which are rarely found in the Alps. Whether it is the East Tyrolean altitude trails in Virgental, which lead into the Hohe Tauern or the routes above the Jöcher in Villgratental, they meander through breath-taking landscapes, where nature plays a major role.

East Tyrol – hiking at the highest level

It is not just the scenery which is unique. The quality of the routes also meets exacting requirements, which is why they have been granted the mountain trail seal of approval from the state of Tyrol. This comprises guidelines for consistent signposting, classification of difficulty levels, signposting and information as well as continual maintenance of the alpine route network. Particularly important - the routes have to proceed through exceptional landscapes and categorically fulfil the requirements of sustainable tourism. The hiking trails in the Hohe Tauern National Park in the Alps certainly are unique. That these routes have been enhanced with the mountain trail seal of approval, goes without saying. Whether it is the Innergschlöß glacier trail, the Venediger altitude trail, the Sudetendeutsche alpine trail or the Gaßla Anda Weg – they are certainly among the loveliest hiking routes in the Alps. Hiking, in the form of walking, is especially popular with families and senior citizens. The leisurely valley hiking trails, some of which are also highly interesting, provide a variety of opportunities. Nature hikes like the Auenweg at the Isel and the NatureEnergyTrail at Umbal Falls are held is as much regard by guests to our state as the countless pilgrimage routes with their spiritual background.
