A Forward-Looking Locomotive Dedication Ceremony at Vienna Central Station

Osttirol is picking up speed

In a symbolic christening ceremony on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the new Taurus locomotive 1116 “Osttirol” was officially put into service, reaffirming the close cooperation between the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and the East Tyrol Tourism Association.

The partnership stands for shared values, future-oriented mobility, and a clear commitment to the sustainable development of Alpine regions. About 70 guests from the tourism, business, and political sectors attended the ceremony at Vienna Central Station. In addition to ÖBB Executive Board Member Dr. Sabine Stock and TVB Chairman Franz Theurl , Federal Minister Mag. Norbert Totschnig and Federal Councilor Markus Stotter also participated in the event.

“Rail is a key tool for climate-friendly mobility in Austria. Projects like this partnership demonstrate how sustainable transportation solutions and regional development can go hand in hand,” Minister Totschnig emphasized in his speech.

Shared Goals, New Connections

The partnership with ÖBB represents a strategic alliance for Osttirol: Both partners share the clear goal of advancing climate-friendly mobility while protecting sensitive natural areas. The locomotive christening takes on special significance in light of the new Koralm Railway and the opening of the tunnel of the same name. This central section of the rail link between Graz (Styria) and Klagenfurt (Carinthia) is considered a quantum leap in infrastructure and brings Osttirol—which lies at the end of this new corridor—significantly closer to the urban centers of Vienna and Graz.

“For Osttirol, this high-performance rail connection means more than just shorter travel times: it is a boon for sustainable tourism and for the people of the region. It creates opportunities without jeopardizing Osttirol’s identity,” emphasized Federal Councilor Markus Stotter.

“Today’s inauguration is a powerful symbol of new beginnings and cooperation,” emphasized Franz Theurl, chairman of the Osttirol Tourism Association. “Osttirol stands for nature, quality, and responsibility. Sustainable mobility is the key to preserving our unspoiled living and recreational environment while remaining accessible for future generations.” As a rolling ambassador, the “Osttirol” locomotive will travel throughout Austria’s rail network in the future, conveying the region’s values—authenticity, sustainability, and Alpine quality.
