Please, where is Osttirol?

Quiet at heart, vibrant in the moment

Please, where is Osttirol? Perhaps it’s exactly where opposites don’t exclude one another, but rather complement each other. While the region south of the main Alpine ridge is known for its tranquility and unhurried experiences of nature, there are also moments in the summer when this image shifts noticeably: When professional cyclists, ultra-runners, and extreme athletes from all over the world gather, and locals celebrate alongside visitors at urban festivals of food and culture. These events don’t become the antithesis of tranquility, but rather create a deliberate contrast that sharpens our appreciation for both. www.osttirol.com

Whether on two wheels, on foot, individually, or as a team, the sporting events in Osttirol are shaped by the Alpine landscape they traverse. The starting gun for a series of top-tier cycling events in 2026 will be fired on June 14 with the SuperGiroDolomitiand the Dolomitenradrundfahrt, which starts and finishes in Lienz. Both races demand endurance and concentration on mountainous routes, while the TourTransalpon June 21 and 22 takes international teams of athletes through the region over several stages. This stage race, which offers both athletic challenges and scenic beauty and is open to everyone, will take place again this year in Lienz and Sillian, from where the route continues over the Passo Giau to Riva on Lake Garda. The Tour of Austria is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, and Lienz is hosting a stage of Austria’s largest sporting event for the 31st time. Just as in the first Tour of Austria in 1949—then known as the Österreich Radrundfahrt—Osttirol’s regional capital will serve as the starting point for the third stage on July 10.

The Großglockner Ultra-Trail, taking place from July 23 to 26, 2026, turns the high-mountain landscape itself into a challenge: the long distance of 110 kilometers, a demanding 6,500 meters of elevation gain, and the immediate proximity to nature define the experience. Born from a dream of former ski racer Werner Grissmann, the Red Bull Dolomitenmann—an extreme sports event—was launched in Lienz in 1988 and is now considered the toughest team competition in the world. Under the motto “One for all and all for one,” teams of four will compete against each other on September 12 in the disciplines of kayaking, paragliding, mountain biking, and running.

In addition to the sporting highlights, it is above all the cultural and culinary events that add an extra dimension to the Osttirol summer. Events such as “Osttirol de luxe” —Austria’s longest-running gourmet festival— set culinary trends and bring producers, top chefs, and guests together around the table. Their mission: to measure “luxury” not in terms of money, but in terms of food produced in harmony with nature. The nonprofit association of the same name sees itself as a platform for regional products paired with high-quality culinary art. From July 16 to August 21, 2026, visitors to Lienz’s main square can savor this philosophy. When the 35th Olala International Theater Festivaltakes over the streets of Lienz from July 27 to August 1, 2026, everyday life becomes a source of wonder, art becomes a tangible experience, and the city itself becomes a stage. Thirty artistic groups from 14 countries will transform squares, alleys, and building facades into venues for exciting performances spanning theater, circus, and contemporary art. Around 45,000 festival guests from neighboring regions, all over Austria, and many parts of Europe attend this annual spectacle.

The Lienz Summer Festival “” (August 7–9, 2026), on the other hand, demonstrates just how easily a sense of community can emerge. Open, accessible, and driven by the idea that a place comes alive when people share it together. Events like the colorful festival mile in the Osttirol district capital are not staged productions in the traditional sense. They arise from the interplay of the region, its people, and the moments shared there, and illustrate what sets this vacation destination south of the main Alpine ridge apart—beyond its scenic beauty—a culture of togetherness.

The 2nd Hoch Kultur Festival takes things to new heights in the truest sense of the word: Amid the Villgrater Mountains at 1,673 meters, the Osttirol Musicbanda, along with their friends and companions, transforms the otherwise tranquil little village of Innervillgraten into a large open-air stage. From August 12 to 15, classical sounds will blend with jazz, folk music, and contemporary music.

About Osttirol. “Osttirol is, of course, different. Natural, in the sense of nature”—that is the motto of this vacation region south of the main Alpine ridge. Nestled between the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, the Lienzer Dolomiten, and the Carnic Ridge, it stands out for its unspoiled beauty, authenticity, and living traditions. With a total of 265 three-thousand-meter peaks and the Großglockner, Austria’s highest summit, Osttirol rightly calls itself “Mountain Tyrol.” Nature lovers will find unspoiled landscapes and plenty of open space there. Active travelers appreciate the ideal conditions for outdoor sports, and Osttirol has long enjoyed cult status among mountaineers and climbers. Gourmet travelers particularly appreciate this southern part of Austria for its culinary diversity, featuring down-to-earth cuisine of the highest caliber: from rustic snack bars to sophisticated award-winning restaurants. In addition, rural traditions play a special role: centuries-old rituals, authentic craftsmanship, and a gently evolved, genuine culture of customs shape the lives of the people in Osttirol—then as now. www.osttirol.com
