Lienz shines as brightly as the sun

Lienz, a charming little town with a Mediterranean flair and a particularly high quality of life, is often referred to as“the gateway to the south”—and rightly so! In this urban yet nature-filled paradise on the southern side of the Alps, the sun shines particularly often, with 2,049 hours of sunshine per year (source: ZAMG). This makes Lienz one of the sunniest cities in Austria.

In Lienz, you’ll encounter cheerful serenity and a southern way of life at every turn. No wonder—with so much sunshine, even the soul gets its share: It’s been proven that soaking up the sun boosts hormone release. This puts the people of Lienz—as well as visitors to this sunny city—in a good mood, making them feel happier and more joyful.

Sip a cappuccino on the palm-lined main square against the spectacular backdrop of the Lienzer Dolomiten, or stroll through the beautifully decorated old town and treat yourself to some ice cream—in Lienz, you’ll experience a sense of lightheartedness and “dolce vita”! If you’re looking for something more active, the “Sun City” of Lienz is the perfect starting point for impressive hikes, outstanding climbing routes, varied biking trails, and thrilling whitewater rafting trips on the Isel River.

Incidentally, even the ancient Romans were drawn to the Lienz valley floor because of its Mediterranean climate and the exceptionally high number of sunny days. They liked it so much that they settled in Aguntum—the only Roman city on Tyrolean soil—as early as 50 AD.
