St. Pöltner Hütte 2.481m

Where the pack carriers used to cross the Tauern, the mountain hut is located.

At 2,481 m it is located at the mountain pass of Felbertauernt, the ancient transition between Salzburg and East Tyrol.

Since its generous expansion and renovation in the years 1992 and 1993, the simple yet cozy mountain hut offers 17 rooms and 50 dormitory spaces. The St. Pöltner Hut, supplied by alternative energy, is the starting point for round hikes, mountain tours, and high alpine hut crossings in the shadow of the Großvenediger. Supply of food and fuel to the hut has always been difficult due to the lack of access roads. It can still only be achieved today through helicopter transport or on the back of the hut's host. Nevertheless, here one enjoys simple yet extremely tasty home-cooked meals.

Ascent from the south:
Starting point Matreier Tauernhaus via Venedigerblick - Panorama Trail, about 3.5 hours; via Venedigerblick - 3 Lakes Trail, about 4.5 hours; via Außergschlöß - Zirbenkreuz, about 4 hours.

Ascents from the north:
Starting point Hintersee in the Felbertal/Salzburg: Normal route via Trudental - Naßfeld - St. Pöltner Hut, about 4 hours; via Gaisstein ("Trassensteig", for experienced climbers only!, rope protection) 3.5 hours.

Hut crossings:
Prager Hut, 8 hours (St. Pöltner West Trail). Fürther Hut over Sandebentörl 6 hours. Alpine Hotel Rudolfshütte (St. Pöltner East Trail), 10-14 hours, high alpine crossing only with glacier equipment!

Summit goals:
- Hochgasser 2,922 m, 2 hours, easy;
- Messelingkogel 2,693 m, 1.5 hours, easy;
- Hörndl 2,852 m, 2.5 hours, medium;
- Tauernkogel 2,989 m, 1.5 hours, difficult.
