Gschlösstal

The most beautiful valley head in the Eastern Alps

The Gschlösstal is considered the most beautiful valley head in the Eastern Alps. From here, a view opens up over the impressive glacial landscape surrounding the Großvenediger. Gigantic glacial forces once shaped this landscape, and here in the Hohe Tauern, they are still at work. Visitors gain insight into the impressive world of the glacier foreland and its pioneer vegetation.

Exactly halfway between Außergschlöss and Innergschlöss lies the rock chapel, carved into the natural rock and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The first sacred building was constructed in 1688 by the alpine pasture owners and was destroyed several times by avalanches. The rock chapel in its current form was built in 1870.

Our tip:

Right next to the Matreier Tauernhaus is the stop for the Panorama Train, which takes you to the Venedigerhaus Alpine Inn (at the end of the valley).
