The drive from Lienz takes you through the picturesque Pustertal to Tassenbach and on to Obertilliach. In the “Wooden Village,” you’ll find the renovated Carriage and Local History Museum, which showcases impressive collections of carriages and sleighs from various historical periods.
After about 10 kilometers, you’ll arrive in Maria Luggau. This famous pilgrimage site is considered the spiritual center of the Lesach Valley and attracts around 80,000 pilgrims annually who come to visit Carinthia’s only basilica.
The Franciscans laid the foundation stone for the monastery in 1593. In 1635, the monastery, the parish, and the church were handed over to the Servites. The sprawling monastery complex is now used as a pilgrim hostel and retreat center. You can learn interesting facts under the theme “What the Monastery Garden Has to Tell” during a guided tour of the historic gardens.
Equally impressive are the five water mills, each about 200 years old, which are still used for grinding grain. Farming tools are on display in the mill museum.
