Unadulterated and less crowded, nature in East Tyrol offers experiences that are hardly perceptible elsewhere: Marmots, bearded vultures, ibexes, eagles or chamois can be observed in their natural habitat in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Just like the breathtaking starry sky- as there is hardly any light pollution in East Tyrol. The panorama of the 266 three-thousand-meter peaks - no matter from which altitude you look at the mountains. The mysticism of the larch forestsand their explosion of color in autumn, mountain lakes or alpine roses as far as the eye can see. Healthy air, freshmountain spring water, valuable food from regional producers and over 600 km² of national park area - family summer in East Tyrol reconnects adults and children with nature.
Hikes for the whole family.
Themed trails entice even the biggest couch potatoes to go hiking. And if the dwarves are still too small, they are packed into the stroller and thus take part in the family adventure. The Defereggen valley with its natural mountain water landscapes and its mystical history was the inspiration for unique natural playgrounds: The water myth Ochsenlacke is the panoramic play arena at the Ochsenlacke on the Mooseralm. Artful playground equipment representing the guardians of the water was developed from local natural woods: Brook Trout, Dipper, Dragonfly, Alpine Newt and Grass Frog. Rumor has it that they once arrived here on an ark. Remnants of this ark now serve as a panoramic pulpit with a magnificent view of the Defereggen valley.
The children's mile in the hiking area Golzentipp in Obertilliach leads along an alpine path suitable for baby carriages along 13 stations from the mountain station of the gondola lift to the Jochsee. All play stations are designed with local natural wood and challenge different senses and the children's skills: balance, climbing, balancing, hearing, smelling, touching, seeing, feeling, coordinating. Two kilometers of trail have never been shorter
In the Lienz Dolomites region, the mountain family experience is just a fifteen-minute gondola ride from the city. The Zettersfeld family park has fifteen adventure play stations along a circular path on the so-called sun terrace of Lienz. The wooden play stations fit naturally into the surroundings and offer space for romping, for games of skill and for resting - the view of the Lienz Dolomites and refreshment stops included. The family park is based on the legendary story of the Steiner Mandl - a mountain spirit whose name and meaning naturally come from the Steinermandl peak at 2,220 meters. It stands for the cairns that are erected by hikers not only there at the very top of the Zettersfeld. In a lovingly designed booklet it leads with funny stories through the stations, each of which is dedicated to an animal and designed accordingly. On display boards, Steinermandl teaches children about the respective animals in a playful way.
Pleasure cycling for families
130 km of pleasure bike paths and endless bike routes crisscross the pristine landscape in East Tyrol. The well-known Drau Cycle Path connects Austria, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia and leads on its popular first stage from Toblach in South Tyrol through the East Tyrolean Puster Valley to Lienz. The bike path along popular excursion destinations with Heinfels Castle as a cultural highlight is always slightly downhill over the 48.5 kilometer stretch and very popular with families in summer. A real insider tip is the 29-kilometer Iseltal Cycle Path between Lienz and Matrei in East Tyrol. The asphalt route leads mostly along the Isel, the last free-flowing glacial river in the Alps. The tour opens up natural spectacles for families, such as waterfalls, rapids and sandbanks.
