That the Großglocker is the king among mountains is probably not something that has to be specifically highlighted. Anyone who has ever encountered it will at any rate have the requisite deep respect for this majestic mountain. And at the same time, anyone who has seen this mountain, will have taken a proper portion of fascination home with them, with a desperate desire to come back soon and meet the ‘king’ again – inapproachable and yet wonderful and inspiring as it is. The Kalser Glocknerstraße is one of the loveliest opportunities to get closer to the Glocker and get to gaze in wonder at it up close.
In the town of Kals/Burg this impressive high alpine road branches off to Ködnitztal. It then proceeds to Lucknerhaus, where you can park and also stop-off for a quick bite to eat in the aforementioned ‘Lucknerhaus’, since it is known that such beauty and natural surroundings gives you an appetite. And from the car park at Lucknerhaus you are served a full dose of beauty, since you get the loveliest view of the Großglockner from here.
At 3798 metres the Großglockner is the highest mountain in Austria and it is doubtless the one which you will remember for a long time to come. At the car park at the Lucknerhaus you will not only be amazed – even though in view of the beauty of the Großglockner you can keep going for a very long time– it is also of course possible to pass the time in a somewhat more active way. Mountain and alpine inn hikes up to over 3000 metres and wonderful ski tours in the Hohe Tauern National Park are possible from this starting point. Or what about the king class of mountain tours – climbing the Glockner itself? You decide!
