Großvenediger 3.666m

The heavily glaciated Großvenediger is the highest summit in the Venediger group and the fourth highest mountain in Austria. It is at 3666 metres altitude and is on the border between East Tyrol and Salzburg. The Großvenediger was scaled 40 years after the Großglockner was first tackled. On 03.09.1841, under the guidance of Josef Schwab, 40 men scaled the summit of the Großvenediger. The ascent was, however, not without complications. On the glacier, the men had to protect themselves from being burnt by the sun with oil and gun powder and were only equipped with crampons to walk on the ice. When tiredness set in many of them remained in the snow on the glacier. In the end only 26 of the 40 men reached the summit.

Starting from Hinterbichl this mountain tour proceeds via a gently rising alpine path to Dorfertal and to the Johannishütte (2121 metres). If you want to make the ascent easier you can also take the taxi shuttle. A well signposted mountain hiking trail takes us to Defreggenhaus (2964 metres). The firn snow on the far reaching glaciated mountains become ever clearer. The climb to the glacier begins below the Mullwitzaderl (3244 metres). Crampons, climbing rope and maybe even booking a mountain guide provide us with additional security. Via Rainer Törl we eventually reach the iced summits of the Großvenediger at 3666 metres altitude.

As a reward for our efforts, a wonderful panoramic view to the Hohe Tauern National Park opens up, with the surrounding mountains of the Dolomites, Dachstein and many more.
