Do you remember? - Exhibition Peter Niedertscheider

A personally touching theme is dedicated to the new exhibition at the gallery in the center of Hopfgarten i.D.: Under the title "Do you remember?", mosaic works by the Lienz stone sculptor Peter Niedertscheider invite visitors to engage with the dimension of 'time'. In his work, time has multiple meanings. Mosaics are not only one of the oldest artistic techniques but also one of the most enduring – as ancient floor mosaics or in early Christian churches, they have survived for centuries. At the same time, the material stone also requires a great deal of time and perseverance in its processing – Niedertscheider dedicates about ten years to mastering a particular technique. In doing so, he sets a soothing counterpoint to today's fast-paced life, which we often lament yet partake in ourselves.

The motifs of the works are based on childhood memories. In the cycle "The Other Courtyard," Niedertscheider captures shadow images of children swinging – a swaying in airy heights in fascinating contrast to the grounded nature of the material. Just like memories in time, stepping back also creates different spatial perspectives than the immediacy of direct experience. The natural stones yield a muted, earthy color palette. Niedertscheider processes remnants from stone masonry, which he manually breaks down into cube-shaped stones, sorts, and prepares. The different fracture surfaces create a relief-like texture, and the incoming light produces corresponding effects. Contours and surface effects are exclusively achieved through the colors of the stones. The direct technique of mosaics allows for no subsequent corrections – what lies, remains.

Peter Niedertscheider, born in 1972 in Lienz, attended the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, studying in the master classes of Alfred Hrdlicka and Brigitte Kowanz; since 2003, he has operated a studio in his hometown.
The gallery in the center invites all interested parties to the opening on Saturday, November 29 at 7 PM at the Hopfgarten village square, where Mag. Rudolf Ingruber will introduce the work.
Afterwards, the exhibition will be on display until May at the following times:
Wednesday and Friday from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
Warm welcome!
