An uplifting feeling

266 three-thousand-meter peaks make Osttirol your "BergTirol"

South of the main Alpine ridge, nestled between the Hohe Tauern and the Lienzer Dolomiten, lies a unique mountain landscape that immediately captivates you. To the north lie the highest peaks of the Austrian Central Alps, with their imposing glaciers and roaring mountain streams, lush meadows, and alpine pastures. This ring extends all the way to the Riesenferner Group in the southwest, with its rugged limestone peaks, bizarre rock formations, and wildly romantic valleys.

Famous names like Großglockner, Großvenediger, Dreiherrenspitze, or Rötspitze are known around the world. But have you ever heard of the “Kuhhaut” or the “Hohen Rosshuf”? The “Ogasil,” the “Quirl,” and the “Yirglkopf” are also three-thousand-meter peaks that probably don’t come to mind right away. But they, too—like all the mountains in Osttirol—are blessed with a fascinating view from the summit.

The mountain landscape surrounding the majestic Großglockner ( 3,798 m), Austria’s highest peak, will draw you to lofty heights. And it certainly doesn’t always have to be extreme mountaineering— there are plenty of rewarding 3,000-meter peaks for leisurely hikers as well. A well-maintained network of hiking trails stretching over 1,000 kilometers opens up the beauty of the Osttirol mountains.

Andreas Rofner climbed all 266 three-thousand-meter peaks in Osttirol within five years

National Park Ranger Andreas Rofner is the best person to ask about which 3,000-meter peak is rightfor you. Over the course of five years , he climbed all 266 of Osttirol’s 3,000-meter peaks together with his friend Reinhard Steiner. “The most important thing is planning ahead. Some peaks can be climbed in glorious summer sunshine, while others are only accessible in winter when there’s ice and snow. And for some, you should definitely book a mountain guide, while others you can conquer on a regular hiking trail—without any climbing sections,” says Andreas. He now has what is probably the best possible view of his workplace, the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, and the mountain world of Osttirol.
