The villages in the Villgratental

Villgratental, which has around 2,000 inhabitants, is a short, enclosed alpine high valley between Osttirol's Pustertal and Defereggental and is 15 kilometers long by road. It branches off to the north near Sillian at Heinfels Castle and forks into a V after five kilometers at Außervillgraten (1,287 m): the left arm, the main valley, leads into the plain of Innervillgraten (1,402 m), while the Winkeltal valley branches off to the right towards Volkzeiner Hütte (1,886 m). Once inside Innervillgraten, the road forks again to the left to the hamlet and pilgrimage site of Kalkstein (1,639 m), the head of the valley; the alpine villages of Unterstaller and Oberstaller can be reached on a side road to the right.

Innervillgraten

The landscape with its striking wooden architecture on the steeply sloping mountain meadows shows that this is still a high valley characterized by mountain farming.
