East Tyrolean Margarethe Oberdorfer is not only a renowned ceramic artist, but has also been a passionate collector for around 50 years. It all started with a decorative stone that she bought with her very first salary.
The stone is one of over 3000 small exhibits on display in the Dölsach Miniature Museum. Oberdorfer's admiration and appreciation for small things led her to launch the Miniature Museum in 2024.
The exhibits were grouped together with great attention to detail and staged for the viewer. For example, the four wooden horsemen in microscope carvings, the two tiny baskets made from cherry and cone stones, the bouquet of flowers made from braided animal hair, the small bottles made from hand-blown glass or the wafer-thin, polished porcelain bowl.
Oberdorfer loves to tell the story of the small exhibits. There is hardly a piece in the many display cabinets of her miniature museum in Dölsach that she does not know the exact origin of. During the world wars, for example, people made a card game out of field post letters when they had to hide in bunkers from bombing raids. Back then, chess pieces could be made from bread by chewing it long enough.
In addition to offering visitors the opportunity to look, marvel and admire, the MiMU also wants to give them a special access to the small works of art through the personal stories about the exhibits. These stories can be documented by the museum so that knowledge about the works and the people behind them is not lost and the value of the little things is not forgotten.
