The mountaineering village of Prägraten am Großvenediger is located at the back of the Virgental Valley, surrounded by no less than 60 three-thousand-metre peaks. It is part of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. It is astonishing that Prägraten am Großvenediger is the fourth largest municipality in Osttirol in terms of area, but has only 1,150 inhabitants. So, it can rightly be said that the freedom in Prägraten am Großvenediger is probably limitless! Thus, you have enough freedom during your vacation to indulge in your outdoor experience.
The village is located, as the name suggests, at the foot of the Großvenediger (3,657 m) - the so-called "Weltalte Majestät". The first climber Ignaz von Kürsinger gave the mountain this euphonious nickname. But this is not the only majestic peak of the last village in the Virgental Valley, there are other desirable high mountain tours: Rainer Horn (3,559 m), Schwarze Wand (3,503 m), Hoher Zaun (3,451 m), Kristallwand (3,310 m), Weißspitze (3,300 m) and many others.
The Venediger Group, the largest contiguous glacier area of the Hohe Tauern, also characterizes the landscape of Prägraten. The Isel, for example, the last free-flowing glacial river in the Eastern Alps, is fed by the mountain group. If you feel like getting to know the river better, we recommend hiking the long-distance trail Iseltrail.
