Cars, motorcycles and motorhomes must have an adhesive vignette on the windshield or a digital vignette when entering an Austrian freeway (marked with an "A") or expressway (marked with an "S") - this is linked to the vehicle's license plate number.
The following options are available, depending on the length of your stay:
Please note: From 2027 onwards, only digital vignettes will be available. In 2026, the classic adhesive vignette will be available for the last time.
You can get them at ASFINAG sales offices, at gas stations or via the website and app of ASFINAG.
By the way: ASFINAG stands for "Autobahn- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-AG". The state-owned company is responsible for the construction, maintenance, operation and tolling of all expressways and freeways in Austria.
Prices vary depending on whether you are travelling on one or two lanes. The prices for 2026 – this time the adhesive vignette is fire red in colour – can be found here:
‘TzGM’ stands for ‘technically permissible total mass’, which you can find in your vehicle registration. If it weighs more than 3.5 tonnes, you do not need a vignette, but rather the so-called GO toll.
When purchasing, please note that 2-month and annual vignettes, if you buy them online, are only valid from the 18th day after purchase for consumer protection reasons. If you buy the adhesive vignette at a sales or service station, it is valid as soon as you have affixed it to the windshield.
Caution: Vignettes that are not affixed are invalid!
In general, the vignette is compulsory throughout Austria. But exceptions prove the rule - which can benefit you on your journey to Osttirol!
The section between the Kufstein border crossing (on the German side of the A93 highway) and the Kufstein-Süd junction is toll-free. If you leave the A12 (Inntal-Autobahn) there, you do not need a vignette.
If you enter Austria at the Hörbranz border crossing (A96 highway on the German side), there is no toll on the A14 (Rheintal/Walgau highway) up to the Hohenems junction.
The A1 (Westautobahn) also offers you a toll-free section: between the Walserberg border crossing (on the German side of the A8 highway) and the Salzburg-Nord j unction, you do not need a vignette.
You can find more information about the vignette and its validity on the ASFINAG website.
Despite the general vignette requirement, there are a few sections of Austrian highways that are subject to special tolls. These are Alpine crossings, which are particularly cost-intensive to build and maintain. On all sections, you can either pay for a single journey or opt for a multi-journey ticket. The following toll stations may affect you when traveling to Osttirol (prices for 2026):
