Rabenstein castle ruins

Rabenstein itself sits enthroned on an elevated position above Virgen. The castle was once the seat of the so-called ‘carers’ of Virgen. Today’s ruins give you an idea of the size of the castle at that time. Finds from the Roman era point to an earlier use of the castle on the hill. The fortifications were built in the 12th century. By 1703 however the castle was abandoned again due to its dilapidation and it then fell into complete ruin due to a later fire.

After extensive safety measures had been carried out the castle ruins provide a rewarding hiking destination today. From the church square, the road ascends to Mellitz. Take a left turn before the Mellitz bridge along Mellitzbach into the Mellitzgraben. At the bank take a left turn to the secured route, or proceed from Mellitz on the asphalt track up to the Eggerhof and from there walk across to the castle. We are rewarded with a superb panoramic view from the Iselschlucht gorge right into Matrei.
