A high level of artistic cooking with a down-to-earthness – gourmet oases with a traditional Tyrolean well-being ambience – East Tyrol’s Hauben-awarded businesses in 2019. Culinary travel peaks of pleasure in East Tyrol: as well as the 266 three-thousand metre mountains there are a range of culinary peaks, East Tyrol’s Hauben-awarded businesses. Eleven of the restaurants recognised by Gault Millau in 2019 have been awarded 15 Hauben.
The Gannerhof in Innervillgraten which is over 300 years old cooks according to the quick methods, and is famed for its lamb dishes, using East Tyrolean mountain lamb. The Saluti in Matrei is the only pizzeria – which also features Alpe-Adria cuisine - to be awarded with 2 "Hauben" by Gault Millau. The Tirolerhof in Dölsach is wholly dedicated to using regional produce – and it has rightly earned the two ‘Hauben’. Gourmets get to enjoy a view to the Dolomites in Restaurant Vincena in the Dolomites golf resort in Lavant. Guests enjoy tasty Two-‘Hauben’-awarded cuisine, if at all possible on the large south-facing terrace with views to the 27-hole golf facilities.
History and tradition find their way into the cuisine in Vital-Landhotel Pfleger in Anras, and indeed in Pfleggerichtshaus Schloss Anras right next door. The hotel is also still a proponent of Tyrolean ‘Wirtshauskultur’. Alpinhotel Jesacherhof is right next to the Brunnalm valley station in St. Jakob. As well as the new Alpin-Wellness-Residenz, this tradition-rich hotel-restaurant has once again got back in amongst the elite of culinary arts, with its great deal of charm and meals made from its own fish and produce caught during its hunts. For 30 years Genießerhotel Rauter in Matrei has been cooking with one ‘Haube’ from Gault Millau, with classics like Kitz, ‘Schöpsernes’ and ‘Niggelen’; it is however also known far beyond its borders for its unique wine list.
Delicious Austrian and international meals are on offer in the Spa-Hotel Zedernklang in Hopfgarten im Defereggental, which can be described as a real well-being temple with its extensive wellness range and 1 ‘Haube’. Fresh fish daily from their own waters are served up by Parkhotel Tristachersee; the Danube salmon is an insider tip here.
The Strasserwirt in Strassen is just a few kilometres from the Italian border and serves delicious high quality Mediterranean food. East Tyrolean specialities with Mediterranean influences - new interpretaions of old recipes - this is exactly the motto from chef Michael Karl with great attention to detail at Gradonna's Mountain Resort.
All East Tyrol’s gastronomes have one thing in common, whether they are an alpine inn or a ‘Hauben’-awarded establishment – they only use produce which is of the highest quality, for the most part from local, organic farms and using animals which have been reared appropriately. Anyone who has sampled the inspiring natural surroundings and the Hauben cuisine will certainly recommend East Tyrol as a gourmet tip.
