We have something extra special for our Osttirol friends, fans, and guests: the memory-function on our website.
In addition to the sunny town of Lienz, East Tirol also has a sunny village in Virgental Valley – the picturesque village of Virgen. South of the Venediger Group, the community is located at just under 1,200 m above sea level in Hohe Tauern National Park. Next to the beautifully shaped summits, the Rabenstei Castle ruins also tower majestically above the sunny plateau of Virgen. Virgen owes its moniker sunny village above all to the south-facing peaks of the Lasörling Group. As these are significantly lower than their neighbours the sun shines a few hours longer here than elsewhere, even in the deep of winter.
The Maria Schnee pilgrimage churchpilgrimage church St. Mary Major in Obermauern is well worth a visit. Before the gates of the church, the custom of offering up a ram is celebrated annually, having been recognised by UNESCO as "intangible cultural heritage".
The natural gem Iselschlucht Gorge and the educational water trail along the Umbal Falls, where the Isel unleashes its mighty powers, are located not far away from Virgen. A few kilometres downriver by the banks of the glacial river, a former sawmill now houses a stone carving workshop. Here, massive serpentines and trees from the valley stripped off their bark are transformed into elaborate sculptures, and the artists often let you watch them at work. In the warmer months, the landscape around Virgen beckons with countless hiking trails and footpaths. Those who want to enjoy nature can embark on the Trail of Senses to explore the Virgen fields and meadows. Several scenic long-distance hiking trails also lead through the picturesque landscape, which surrounds the national park community of Virgen. The walking and running-Arena Virgental also boasts 76 kilometres of trails and 14 signposted circuits of various distance and levels of difficulty.
Winter in Virgental also makes for extraordinary experiences of nature. Snow-covered scenery and craggy mountaintops. Far away from the hustle and bustle you can experience pure winter bliss here.
Not least thanks to its beautiful peaks, the sunny village is known as a true paradise for ski touring fans. A small ski area is located nearby and accessible with the Fellachlift, providing a stress-free skiing experience in particular for beginners and families. With the free ski bus you can also get to Austria's largest ski area, quickly and hassle-free. In addition to expansive slopes, the Grossglockner Resort Kals/Matrei offers winter sports fans a magnificent panorama of Grossglockner, Grossvenediger and a further 60 peaks topping 3,000 m. The snow-covered landscape of Hohe Tauen National Park can be optimally enjoyed on a winter hike or a snowshoe hike together with a national park ranger. Tobogganing fans and passionate cross-country skiers are also well catered for in Virgen. The floodlit toboggan run Würfelehütte and the wide range of cross-country ski tracks leave nothing to be desired.
