We have something extra special for our Osttirol friends, fans, and guests: the memory-function on our website.
With 249 inhabitants Untertilliach is certainly not the biggest of the towns in East Tyrol. Yet in terms of location and natural setting it can compete with all the other towns, even out-trump many. East Tyrol’s smallest town in terms of inhabitant numbers is set in a wonderful location between the Lienz Dolomites and the Carnic Alps. In contrast to Obertilliach, tourism in Untertilliach is not particularly evident. Tourist numbers are even below the district average. So you get to explore Untertilliach all to yourself. And exploring there really is aplenty. Untertilliach, which is often characterised as a very charming little mountain village, located in the lovely Lesachtal, characterised by mountain farms and little chapels. These buildings alone make Untertilliach incredibly charming, original and genuine.
You don’t have to “just” stay in the village, to delight in this charm - not at all; you can treat yourself to one view or another in the surrounding mountains, since Untertilliach is an excellent starting point for hikers in particular. You get to conquer a few summits here. For those who are really motivated, the Reitkarspitze (2422 metres) and the Hochspitz (2581 metres) are recommended. The Kircher alpine pastures are another tip, which you can get to from Untertilliach in around two hours. You definitely shouldn’t miss the alpine festival with its mountain mass, which takes place in September. And of course there is the nearby border area slope, which links the towns of Kartitsch, Obertilliach, Untertilliach, Maria Luggau and St. Lorenzen in Carinthia with a whopping 60 kilometres, a special treat indeed. Last but not least, ski tourers are very well catered for. There are almost countless destinations here, for instance the Schwalbenkofel (2159 metres) and Spitzköfele near Obertilliach.
