You are here: Home / Hochpustertal / Towns & Valleys / Kartitsch

Anyone who travels to Kartitsch is heading to the highest lying of all East Tyrol’s valleys – Tyrol’s Gailtal. It begins close to the area which merges into Pustertal and stretches to the Kartitsch Saddle at 1525 metres. Seen in this way, Kartitsch at 1323 metres, is located in the golden centre. It is set in a beautiful location, primarily on terraces on both sides of the Gailbach. It is worth taking a look around in Kartitsch, since the panorama views which Kartitsch offers, can be definitely be described as spectacular. In the north you can see the western foothills of the Lienz Dolomites, while when you look south your gaze is drawn to the Carnic Alps. You can catch a glimpse of the border to Italy there too. With regard to tourist opportunities Kartitsch really splashes out. In terms of overnight stays so many East Tyrolean towns are well behind it. In winter, tourist numbers are double and in summer around 2.5 times higher than the average for the district.

That’s hardly a surprise; the activity options are impressive in winter and summer alike. Want a snippet? One ski area with two ski lifts, a curling rink and an ice-skating rink, a cross-country slope and two toboggan runs. In summer sporty people really are well catered for thanks to the two mountain bike routes and the tennis courts. Taking centre stage however are the numerous, almost countless, opportunities to head out hiking. The hiking trails on the Carnic altitude trail are almost (quite rightly) legendary. Obstansersee-Hütte and Filmoor-Standschützenhütte tempt you in to stay a while, but it’s also worth staying in the village itself, since there are a few conservation-protected buildings in Kartitsch, which are mainly religious. The pilgrimage church “Unserer Lieben Frau Mariahilf” and its filial church “St. Oswald” stand out in particular.
