Hochpustertal - Towns & Valleys


In terms of inhabitants, Sillian is one of the biggest towns in East Tyrol and is the main town in the Hochpustertal region. The western limits of the town also form the state border between Austria and Italy.

Covering an area of 10.27 km2 it is the second smallest of the 33 towns in East Tyrol. The Villgrater mountains surround this idyllic little village, as do the Lienz Dolomites.

The village of Anras is set in a lovely location. The settlements of this area are predominantly on the south-facing upland terrace, and also on the floor of the valley.

Außervillgraten is a town in which something is missing; things which you’ll find elsewhere – après-ski, parties and ski lifts. This dearth does however make it possible for you to see the fundamental - Villgratental’s magnificent natural surroundings.

Heinfels is in East Tyrol’s Oberland area. Heinfels Castle sits enthroned just above the town and piques your curiosity about Heinfels itself, its history and what it is like today.

The mountaineering village of Innervillgraten is located in the inner section of Villgratental and is alluring with its almost unspoilt natural and cultural landscape.

Strassen is located at 1098 metres altitude and is also the place where the road branches off into Tyrol’s Gailtal, which proceeds directly to Lesachtal.

Kartitsch is located at 1323 metres altitude, in the golden centre of Tyrol’s Gailtal, picturesquely surrounded by the Lienz Dolomites and the Carnic Alps.

Obertilliach sits proudly enthroned at 1450 metres in Lesachtal between the Lienz Dolomites and the Carnic Alps. The River Gail flows through the valley and also through Obertilliach.
