St. Veit in Defereggen

Holiday in mountain paradise

Only a few valleys are as rich in water treasures as Defereggen Valley in East Tirol, which has preserved much of its originality. All around these riches of water, the Defereggen offers more options for enjoyment, experiences and recreation than most other valleys in the Alps. Nestled among the unique Alpine scenery, the town of St. Veit lies amidst the slopes of this wonderful valley. Surrounded by lush meadows in summer, in winter covered with thick layers of snow. In the village centre, the bell tower of the beautiful St. Veit parish church with its red tiled roof impressively rises into the skies. No giant buildings disrupt the scenery around the highest-located resort, which also produced the famous dialect poet Reimmichl. Hiding behind the synonym is priest and author Sebastian Rieger, who was born in this small mountain village in 1867. The Reimmichl Fountain was built in his honour at the village square.

If you also want to experience the history of Reimmichl or want to relax in absolute tranquillity without through traffic, St. Veit is the ideal holiday destination for you. Whether it's an inn, an apartment, a room on a farm or an alpine hut - you'll find your personal retreat in them.

Summer in St. Veit

As soon as the last snow has disappeared from Defereggen Valley, countless hiking tours around St. Veit can be undertaken. A prime example for these varied hiking trails are the tours up to Speikboden and the Gritzer Lakes, proceeding along the sunny side of the mountains. The cross-border 2-Valley-Trail into South Tirolean Antholzer Valley impresses with beautiful scenic features and great mountain experiences. Where alpine farmers, miners, worshippers and smugglers fared since time immemorial, you can now hike into neighbouring Italy on six daily stages. Located at lofty heights and amidst slow-paced nature, the comfortable alpine huts around St. Veit such as the Leppetal Alm and the Speikbodenhütte also beckon to linger. But the valley also features many rewarding destinations. A walk through the picturesque "Alley"-settlement features an educational trail telling visitors more about life on the sunny hillsides. Those who want to boost their day with some adrenaline, can try out archery on an archery course. Golfing fans will find a beautiful nine-hole course in St. Veit.

St. Veit in winter

When the whole valley is covered in a thick blanket of snow, the treetops sprinkled with sugar and the first skis squeak in the snow, then winter has set in in idyllic Defereggen Valley. This is when in St. Veit you can set off on a colourful ski tour up to the small or big Leppleskofel mountain or into Brunnalm ski area, and experience unforgettable moments on a toboggan ride along the Oberholz and Leppetal toboggan runs. The latter also beckons to go on a romantic evening ride on two runners thanks to its floodlights. In the valley, the many kilometres of cross-country ski tracks open up the scenic features around St. Veit and Schwarzach River in all their glory.
