Current weather conditions

The Pfannspitze is located south east of Obstanser See Hütte (2304m) and is one of the rarely completed ski tours on the Carnic ridge. Access to the mountain proceeds through the only to a limited extent ski-friendly Winklertal and is the reserve of ambitious ski climbers, who are not afraid to swap their skis for crampons. The problem lies in the blocking rock faces, which we are ‘confronted with’ half-way up. Through these is a rocky path which proceeds partly across a wooden bridge, which is often damaged in the winter. This exposed passage proceeding through terrain where there is the possibility of falling is not long, does however require the relevant equipment to proceed safely (see photo tour 19). The Winklertal is above the rock face which is so wide and extensive that there is space for three worthwhile tour destinations, which are outlined in the following pages. Starting point is the town of Kartitsch in Tirol’s Gailtal. In the town centre we head right after a bank opposite Gasthaus Dolomitenblick, heading down to the bottom of the valley (supermarket) to Pension Waldruhe and we continue heading up to the sports ground (1415 m, car parking). We now proceed along a forest road heading south into Winklertal and via nice serpentines up to the sombre cliff face. For the most part skis have to be carried here and depending on the conditions have to be swapped for crampons. The exposed points which are mostly tackled with care, are right at the start. As soon as the route becomes wider we are now away from terrain where there is a risk of falling and can put our skis back on. In more hairpin bends, along a wooden bridge, we get to the dreamily beautiful Obstanser Wiesenboden with Prinz Heinrich Chapel hidden behind the trees (1962 m). The track now bears in a diagonal to the south east via a base area and, like a summer trail, heads up the north west slopes beneath the Rosskopf. We come to a gully which is like a trough, which takes us south to the dreamy inn at Obstanser See (2304m). Here we bear east in the secluded altitude corrie, before we bear south again in the base area beneath the Rosskopftörl and aim for the wide saddle on the ridge ridgeline. While the views open up to the wild Sexten Dolomites, we proceed on the short south-west ridge, keeping an eye out for cornices, to the summit of the Pfannspitze (cross). Descent along the ascent track. For photos of the rock face, see the tour to the Gatterspitze.
