Hiking vacation with dog

Experience unforgettable adventures together with your furry friend

On Osttirol's hiking trails you can discover the wonderful, diverse nature of Osttirol. The hike is even more beautiful if you do it with your dog. Whether steep trails for sporty companions or flat circular hiking trails for older four-legged friends: there is something for everyone in our mountains. Safety is our top priority: to prevent confrontations between free-roaming cows and dogs, the hiking trails marked as dog-friendly are cow-free.

Checklist for your vacation with a dog

Climbing the summit with your dog is a particularly wonderful experience. However, there are a few things you should consider in advance to ensure that the hike is as relaxed and safe as possible. We have put together a checklist so that you have everything you need in your backpack when you head up the mountain together.

  • Lead and muzzle: Confrontations with other dogs or anxious hikers can also occur on the mountain. So always take a lead and a muzzle with you.

  • Drinking water: Humans are not the only ones who crave a thirst quencher after a strenuous hike. You should also take enough water with you for your dog.

  • Food: While we are already looking forward to food and drink at the hut, your dog should not miss out either: Pack food so that your four-legged friend doesn't go hungry.

  • Thermal blanket or carpet pad: Temperatures can easily be underestimated, especially on the mountain. So that no one has to freeze, think about a thermal blanket or carpet pad before setting off to protect your dog from the cold.

  • A small towel: unexpected rain showers are not uncommon on the mountain. It's best to arm yourself with a small towel. Your dog will be dry and warmed up again in no time.

  • Dog waste bags: Please make sure you always take dog waste bags with you. Dog waste should not only be removed in the valley, it is also important not to soil the path and the landscape on the mountain.

Dog as a source of danger

In the following video, experts explain the best way for dog owners to behave on a hike with a dog, where confrontations with free-roaming cows can occur. This can minimize the risk of your dog or yourself being injured.

Cow-free hikes

To ensure that the hike with your dog is a complete success, safety is the top priority. To avoid confrontations between dogs and cows, the hikes listed are cow-free or cows are only in fenced-in areas. Despite conscientious research, no guarantee can be given for a cow-free hiking route.
