Mountain-Water-Paradise Defereggental

In the middle of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

In Defereggental, a particularly pristine valley in the mountains of Osttirol, water characterizes the unique alpine landscape. High mountain lakes, waterfalls, mountain rivers, glaciers, springs, moors and even healing waters from the depths of the earth - a legacy of the primeval seas - all enliven the natural area in the middle of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. For many people who come to the Defereggental to relax, water is the defining quality of this recreational landscape.

Here, only the best spring water comes from all drinking water pipes, the educational center of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern"Haus des Wassers" is located in Defereggental and the "Deferegger Heilwasser" (healing water) has its origin.

Whether on the beautiful Water experience trail St. Jakob i. D., on the spectacular Waterfall path Stallerbach or on the Water hiking trail Hopfgarten i. D. - there are unforgettable experiences by the water everywhere. On many hikes, whether to the Obersee lake, to the Pfauenauge hydroelectric power station, along the roaring Trojeralmbach stream or on a walk along the Schwarzach - you will encounter crystal-clear, refreshing Alpine water treasures everywhere. The Nationalpark Hohe Tauern frames the water treasures of the Defereggental with its unique high mountain backdrop.

Introducing WALU our water flea:

Hello dear children,

I'm Walu, the water flea from the Defereggental, maybe you've already seen me hopping by? My home is a very special place. I live in paradise, or rather in the Mountain-Water-Paradise of the Defereggental. I'm so excited and really looking forward to introducing you to my water world.

What do you think if I take you on a journey of discovery through the water treasures of our valley?

Well, it's clear that water is my element anyway. That's why the "Haus des Wassers" (house of water) in St. Jakob i. D. is a particularly exciting place for me. I love listening to the stories told by the national park rangers and doing exciting water-related experiments with children and young people. After I've quenched my thirst for knowledge, I'm drawn to the Auentümpfl water play area or the Natural water playground next to the Schwarzach.

A very special experience for you and your whole family is the new play and excursion arena “Wassermythos (water myth) Ochsenlacke” at lofty heights near the Mooseralm in the Skizentrum St. Jakob i. D..

WALU der Wasserfloh

On the new circular path around the reservoir we meet my friends Salmo, the brown trout - Anura, the frog - Odo, the dragonfly - Uro, the alpine newt and Cinni, the dipper - they are simply huge! You can climb, jump, balance, slide and much more on them to your heart's content.

The thundering waterfalls and rushing waters are also a thrilling nature experience for me in the valley - there's no such thing as boredom here. To relax, I hop on and make myself comfortable by the calm rivers and quiet mountain lakes - my Mountain-Water-Paradise Defereggental is simply wonderful.

The Nationalpark Hohe Tauern has built a wildlife observation tower in the Oberhauser Zirbenwald especially for us, which towers above the treetops of our local stone pines. From there we have a great view of the mountains opposite, where we can observe local wildlife. This tower also gives us a great view of our main river, the Schwarzach, and a waterfall behind it.

As we all know, the best is saved for last: You can also take me, Walu - the water flea from the Defereggental - home with you. Then you can remember the exciting water experiences in the beautiful Defereggental for a long time to come!
So, see you soon!

Your Walu

Excursion destinations

Water is an ancient symbol of strength, renewal and health. Hardly any other valley in the Alps offers as many opportunities forenjoyment, adventure and relaxation around water as the Defereggental in the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. It is not for nothing that our vacation region says: "Here I am human, here I can be".

The mill "Stadtner Mühle"

The “Stadtner Mühle” was not always located at the waterfall in Maria Hilf. It used to stand in the Maria Hilf district of Pötsch and was reinstalled at the waterfall in Maria Hilf a few years ago. The "Stadtner Mühle" owes its name to the locals, as the district of Maria Hilf is also called "Stadt" (city) by them. In the summer months, you can still watch the millers grinding the grain and marvel at the miller's craft. But the “Stadtner Mühle” and the nearby Maria Hilf waterfall are also worth a visit on other days!

Deferegger Heilwasser (healing water)

Europe's oldest healing water treasure springs from a depth of 1850 meters. The precious fossil water concentrate has matured for millions of years in the depths of the Tauern mountains. The iodine-containing sodium-chloride brine spa is effective against skin, bronchial and joint problems. Guided tours of the Heilwasserwelt tell you all about this "heritage of the primeval sea" discovered in 2004. Mythenplatz and the Kneipp fountain invite you to linger in this place of power.

Fountain "Reimmichlbrunnen"

Sebastian Rieger was born in the small mountain village of St. Veit in Defereggen in 1867, who would later become known as a priest and writer under the synonym Reimmichl. The Reimmichl fountain on the village square in front of the local church was created in his honor. The life-size bronze sculpture of the poet was created by sculptor Georg Planer, another well-known son of the community.

A new village fountain made of natural stone was built on the square in front of the church in Hopfgarten i. D. as part of the village renewal in 1999. It is dedicated to St. John Nepomuk, the local parish patron saint. This saint was martyred as a priest in the Vltava in 1393. Since then, he has been a popular water saint who protects against floods. It is best to park at the entrance to the village next to the main road and then take a walk through the beautiful village.

Mountain lakes

Once you reach the mountain lake, you experience silence, vastness, barrenness and mysterious depths. In the midst of the mountain world of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, which is constantly changing due to frost, erosion and glacial ice, the lake is a magical haven of peace. After a long ascent, the cold water of the lake mobilizes unexpected strength. The stillness of the lake transforms uncertainty into trust and mobilizes the buried powers of intuition.

Circular hike Obersee

The circular hike around the idyllic Obersee is easy and beautiful. People have been living here since the Mesolithic Age, as archaeological finds on the shores of the lake show. One particularly remarkable find is a 5 m long and 1000 year old dugout canoe made of Swiss stone pine, which was recovered from the bottom of the lake. The boat can be admired in the archaeological museum "Zeitreise Defereggen" in St. Jakob i. D. to marvel at.

Waterfalls

Waterfalls pulsate, convey energy, liberate. They give you strength when you feel tired and constricted. You can feel the vital power of the water in the spray and the roar. The finely atomized, ionized water droplets are what make the effect, say the scientists. In their studies, they come to the conclusion that the health effect of the waterfall on stress and burnout is proven. Just a three-day, one-hour stay at the waterfall significantly improves stress-psychological parameters and increases subjective well-being.

Water hikes

Mountain streams are a constant companion on the way in the Defereggental . Through them you learn that the only constant in life is change. Streams change, erode and land. Layers, islands and remnants of the last floods are everywhere, alongside exposed traces of the past. The angular and angular of the rocks merges into the flowing, the round, is polished smooth. Sitting by the mountain stream, feet dipped in the cold water, you can feel the change. Here, superficial crusts are polished away and hidden things become visible. Here on the banks of the stream, you feel connected to life.

The "Schwarzach"

The Schwarzach, also known as the Talbach, is the lifeline of the Defereggental. It rises at an altitude of 2.480 m at the foot of the Schwarzachkees and overcomes an altitude difference of around 1.600 meters over a length of 43 kilometers before flowing into the Isel at Huben. On its way, it takes in 34 tributaries and drains an area as large as Munich. In the upper reaches up to Maria Hilf, the Schwarzach lies in the outer zone of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. Here it still flows largely uninfluenced by man. But the Schwarzach is also a natural body of water in other respects. Fly fishermen, paddlers and recreationists appreciate its excellent water quality and beauty. The name of the river ("Schwarzach") and that of the valley ("Defereggen") have more in common than it first appears. The Slavic word "Duberach", modified from the earlier Celtic "Dubaricon" ("dubar": black), is the common origin of both names.

Expansion Schwarzach

Right next to the Defereggental Landesstraße, below the Haus des Wassers, the Schwarzach, the main river in the valley, has been successfully restored to its former glory as a wide, near-natural mountain river. Information boards provide information about the surroundings and the project. A small pond is home to a variety of aquatic creatures such as dragonfly larvae, tadpoles, grass frogs and many more.
