WALKS WITH SNOWSHOES

Possible starting points for our walks are the shade at Virger, the Tauern Valley, Kals or the Zedlacher Paradies.

Schneeschuh Osttirol

Equipped with snowshoes and binoculars let’s trek in the valleys full of snow. You will find out all about the struggle for life of animals and plants in winter. Accompanied by the personnel of the National Park you can follow the animals’ tracks in the snow and, with a little bit of luck, watch them in their habitat.
Taking a relaxing rest in the snow you can also learn more about the perils hidden in the mountains in winter and how to cope with them, for example how to build an igloo, a bivouac in snow, how an avalanche transceiver works and so on.
The tour takes about five hours. www.hohetauern.at

Walking with snowshoes in the “Hochpustertal”
To draw lonely tracks in the peaceful landscape, to look for the route alone or get to the chosen destination in small groups: this is all possible walking with two snowshoes, a good physical condition and the desire to experience something out of the ordinary. Walks with snowshoes are gaining popularity and one should not wonder, as less equipment and skills are required. People who like trekking will enjoy walking with snowshoes. Today it has become easier than before, because, the snowshoes are made of aluminium and no longer of twigs, they are really lighter to carry uphill. Moreover, this funny winter activity is particularly suitable for people who don’t like the turmoil of the wider skiing areas and prefer to experience nature alone, something they will never forget as it is a very special kind of adventure.

Winter in East Tyrol is something special. Lying on the south side of the Alps, best conditions are to be found not only on the 350 km slopes and 400 km Cross-country skiing tracks, but also on sledge tracks.
35 sledge tracks are to be found in little East Tyrol, where 150 km fun on the sledge is awaiting the whole family. It is easy to ascend to the starting points of the tracks; they can be reached by lift, shuttle-taxi or taking a walk through the snowy winter landscape. After having taken a rest and regained strength in one of the many sledge-huts, let us get started! It is up to you to reach the valley at great speed or to take the many bends slowly. Every sledge-run is accompanied by the breathtaking mountain scenery of East Tyrol with the highest mountains of Austria, unspoilt nature, the clear winter air and a lot of sunshine.
Night-sledging when there is a full moon are gaining popularity among sledge fans. When the moon casts its pale light on the landscape resembling a winter-fairy tale, many inhabitants and guests go sledging, best equipped with head-lamps and torches. An adventure out of the ordinary!
The sledge track on the “Moa-Alm” is loved by families in particular. A tractor pulls the sledges of the children up to the hut – an adventure that children will not easily forget.
