THE TAMING OF THE “UNHOLDEN”

The “Unholden”, the “fiends”, is the local name of the Lienzer Dolomites, because of their bizarre and wild rock formation.

This paradise for rock climbers with its climbing-tracks is getting more and more popular. For this reason, the Alpine forum Lienz has renovated and rebuilt a number of attractive rock-climbing-tracks. The guests of the Dolomite town get their adrenaline flowing under secure and safe conditions. Beginners make their first trial climbs under experts’ advice in “Treepark” on the glass-clear “Tristacher See” (Tristach Lake). The highlight of the “climbing-garden” with several bridges, catwalks and ropes all amidst the fir trees is the “Catapult”. This hurls the climbers several meters through the air, secured of course, and swings towards the Lienzer basin. On these first climbing-trials you learn enough to attempt to climb the “Laserz-“ or “Madonnensteig”. A special challenge for mountaineers is the climb up of the “Galitzenklamm”, directly situated on the cycle path along the river Drau. Cyclists may hire a climbing-set in order to climb through the ravine. The roaring water, glistening droplets, roped bridges and the admiring looks of spectators walking on the path in the ravine, make this climb a very special experience to remember. There is another climbing hot spot in the “Hohen Tauern”, the “Blauspitze” (2.575 m) that is the El Dorado for the height-hungry. It will take some three hours to ascend to this peak, starting from Kals and enjoying the wonderful view of the Großglockner, Austria’s highest mountain (3.798 m).
