The airfield of Nikolsdorf near Lienz is one of the best places to start the fascinating flights along the Alps (Großglockner and Großvenediger mountain ranges) as well as the Lienzer and the Sextener Dolomites. Best conditions to perform flying sports in East Tyrol are given through the excellent thermals during the most part of the year, thanks to the micro-climate of the basin of the Drau Valley, exalted by the contrasts of the landscape. Moreover, the comradeship and the team spirit of the sailplaning club of Lienz add something more. Guests find them so attractive, that they want to keep coming back. Motor gliding and aerotowing can be learned and performed here. Flight tours for guests are offered during the weekend in the high season. You can find all activities on the web page of the club.

The club owns several flying machines, such as DG 100 and 303, Twin Astir, P 96 HB 23 and a DR 400 “moto”.
A typical tourist flight-tour of East Tyrol: take-off, lift to Mount Stronachkogel, where, due to the narrowness of the valley, the typical summer wind blows hard from the valley and lifts the machine up, thus becoming itself the entry par excellence into the clouds of the Alps. The Großglockner is quickly reached, you fly over the valley of the Isel and mount “Böse Weibele” and back to the Lienzer Dolomites. That is the classical tourist flight over East Tyrol with its unforgettable views: a reason to come back!
