Oberlienz

Oberlienz is a district with 1404 inhabitants (as at 01.03.2013). It is located at the edge of the Lienz basin, in Iseltal. The district of Oberlienz incorporates the towns of Oberlienz, Oberdrum and Glanz. Initially in Oberlienz your gaze is drawn to Lienz’s ‘local mountains’ to the south of Oberlienz, the Villgratner Mountains. The so-called ‘Böse Weibele’ , ‘Bloßenegg’ and the ‘Hochstein’ are constantly in focus here. However, Oberlienz is not ‘just’ in a good and lovely location, it is also steeped in history. Single finds indicate that people settled in this area even during the pre-Roman era. The name ‘Lienz’ has its origins predominantly in Celtic. It is highly probable that Lienz is derived from the word ‘lokina’, which means something like ‘arch-shaped curved area’. The word was revised over time by the Celts and the Romans.

The district’s crest too is very revealing – centuries of the affiliation of Oberlienz to the County of Gorizia is alluded to, as is the Lienz Rose. The history and also the geographic location and proximity to Lienz can also be taken from the crest. Even though winter tourism in Oberlienz is not particularly heavily developed, there are a few sights which you can visit in summer and winter alike. Lienz and the Zettersfeld ski area are within reach. The sights include – Oberlienz parish church, Oberdrum succursal church and the open-air museum in Oberlienz are there to visit. The open-air museum is an agricultural museum which was built in 1964 to complement the agricultural collection in Bruck Castle. In the open-air museum you get to see authentic, history-steeped, East Tyrolean buildings and structures.
